Sony Electronics announced the RM-DP7 and RM-DP5, two remote control units designed to combine a production monitor with direct camera control. The systems initially support Sony’s FX5, FX3, FX2 and FX30, with FX6 and BURANO compatibility planned for a firmware update in the second half of 2027.

The idea is straightforward but significant: instead of treating the monitor as a passive display attached to a camera, Sony is making it part of the camera-control system.

For documentary filmmakers, commercial shooters and increasingly common one- and two-person crews, that distinction matters. A camera can sit on a rig, vehicle, crane, gimbal, or other remote location while the operator stays in a more useful viewing position.

At the center of the DP7 and DP5 is Sony’s “BIG6” home screen, which provides access to major camera functions without requiring the operator to reach the camera body.

With compatible autofocus lenses, the units can control focus. Compatible power-zoom lenses can be operated remotely, while exposure and other camera settings can also be adjusted from the monitor.

The interface isn’t limited to touch.

Sony has incorporated a control knob, multifunction dials and assignable physical buttons, which is arguably one of the more important decisions in the design. Touchscreens are convenient for menus, but physical controls are generally faster and more reliable when an operator is trying to make an exposure or focus adjustment without taking their eye away from the image.

The two models share much of their basic functionality, but the 7-inch DP7 is the more capable unit for professional production environments.

The DP7 supports 12G-SDI, as well as HDMI, and can perform bidirectional SDI/HDMI conversion. That gives it considerably more flexibility in a production environment where SDI infrastructure is already part of the workflow.

The 5-inch DP5, meanwhile, is the more compact option and is likely to make more sense on smaller camera builds where size and weight are priorities.

Both units feature Full HD panels with brightness up to 2,000 cd/m². Sony is also putting considerable emphasis on color accuracy. Sony is treating color calibration as a production feature.

Both monitors use Sony’s professional video-monitor color calibration technology. Each unit is individually calibrated at the factory, with the system designed to compensate for chromaticity and color-temperature drift during operation.

The DP7 and DP5 support six presets and up to 16 LUTs, allowing operators to monitor the camera image with different viewing transformations and looks.

For documentary and run-and-gun work in particular, where there may not be a dedicated DIT or colorist on set, having a calibrated monitoring reference at the operator’s position can be valuable.

Designed for real production environments

Both controllers use a rigid aluminum body and incorporate a design intended to address dust and moisture exposure.

Power is similarly flexible. The DP7 and DP5 support Sony BP-U series batteries, USB Power Delivery and DC input – for only the DP7, giving productions several ways to integrate the monitors into existing power systems.

Pricing and availability

Sony announced both controllers September 8, 2026, with shipping planned for January 2027. The RM-DP7 carries a $3,099 MSRP, while the RM-DP5 is priced at $2,299.
