Thanks for including Cutler, Iain. Full disclosure: I’m the developer, so take this with the right amount of salt.

A small update: it’s past the closed beta now, with a 7-day trial open at cutler.miracontents.com.

What it does today, in Final Cut Pro (Premiere and Resolve are in progress): it transcribes locally, looks at the actual frames rather than only the transcript, logs and keywords the footage, syncs multicam by sound, and then hands back a paper edit with a reason for every clip, plus an FCPXML timeline you finish yourself. It runs through your own Claude Code or ChatGPT plan, so there’s no API key to set up.

On “relatively boring cuts” — fair, volume is where it pays off. But where I lean on it most is interviews and talking heads with lots of takes, which is usually the slow part.

And to your point about editors building their own tools: I’ve edited for 20+ years and started Cutler in May with no coding background beyond basic HTML. Claude Code wrote the code; my job was knowing what an assistant editor should hand over. I also put the FCPXML import lessons I learned the hard way on GitHub as a free skill (fcpxml-field-notes), in case it saves anyone else the same pain.

Happy to send you a licence for the comparison article. And if anyone tries it, please try to break it, that’s the feedback I need.

New software can make a real difference in workflow and productivity, but I think it’s also important to consider how well each tool fits into an existing setup.
